This sad incident took place at Sange Village in Democratic Republic of Congo. Oil tanker overturned, exploded and set fire to different parts of village. 220 people are feared dead as a result of this unpleasant incident. The effected village, Sange is located near eastern border of country.
Explosion took place after the fuel oil spread through the village and that is the reason of extremely high death toll. No official count of injured people has still been showed, which of course is a point of worry. Such incidents are common in this region and last time in October 2009, 70 people were burnt to death as oil tanker exploded. Similar unpleasant incidents took place in November 2008, August 2008, January 2008 and March 2007….
A rough Red Cross estimate tells that there are almost 100 people injured and the death toll is likely to rise.
The ICRC deputy head of delegation in area said “”It is a small village. When the truck turned over a lot of people gathered round. It then caught fire and spread through the village.”
Many concrete built and straw built homes engulfed in the fire which broke out at night. According to Governor of South Kivu, some of the dead includes people who were trying to steal the fuel but many of the dead includes people who were indoors and watching FIFA WC match…!
