Dizziness caused by constant earthquake aftershocks jolt Japanese people

Aside from the radiation scare, the Japanese people are also dealing with  motion sickness caused by hundreds of aftershocks since the massive earthquake of March 11.
Japanese medical experts said a great number of Japanese people are complaining of dizziness due to the series of earthquake aftershocks experienced by Japan recently.
This observation was supported by Mejiro University Clinic in Japan, which specializes in ear, nose, and throat conditions.
“They are likely experiencing ‘earthquake sickness’, a condition similar to motion sickness,” the hospital’s chief physician Hideaki Sakata wrote on his
blog.
According to reports, residents and rescue workers in the northeastern region, struck by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake on March 11, had felt nearly 400 aftershocks stronger than magnitude 5.0 as of Friday morning.
Moreover, it was also reported that countless smaller jolts have also hit, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
Reports revealed that the conditions have even affected people in Tokyo, more than 300 kilometers away from the offshore epicentres.
Sakata said the sickness can be eased by simply relaxing, and by sticking to fixed routines such as getting up and going to sleep at roughly the same time each day.
Earlier, the Japanese government revealed the recent earthquake and tsunami that hit the country caused some $300 billion damage to their economy.
Economy Minister Kaoru Yosano estimates the damage of the natural disaster at 15 trillion yen to 25 trillion yen ($185 billion to $300 billion).
It was learned that the earthquake has become Japan’s deadliest natural disaster since the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, which killed more than 142,000 people.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced from their homes and have taken shelter in emergency facilities.
The Japanese archipelago is located in an area where several continental and oceanic plates meet.
This is the cause of frequent earthquakes and the presence of many volcanoes and hot springs across Japan. If earthquakes occur below or close to the ocean, they may trigger tidal waves (tsunami).
Many parts of the country have experienced devastating earthquakes and tidal waves in the past.
In January 1995 a strong earthquake hit the city of Kobe and surroundings.
Known as the Southern Hyogo Earthquake or Great Hanshin Earthquake, it killed 6,000 and injured 415,000 people. 100,000 homes were completely destroyed and 185,000 were severely damaged.
