Philippine Military: No truth to reports that 10 foreign terrorist entered the country

Category : Asia, World

A military official in the Philippines has denied reports that 10 foreign terrorist groups have entered o sow terror in the country’s capital Metro Manila.
Brig. Gen. Jose Mabanta, spokesman of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said there is no truth to such claims since it is an unverified raw information.
Mabanta said based on their own intelligence gathering there is no truth to such a report as claimed by former Philippine police intelligence chief Rodolfo “Boogie” Mendoza.
He said Mendoza already retired from active police service which is why he do not have access to the intelligence community.
The military official noted that Mendoza is a good intelligence officer during his stint in the police but now he is already retired.
Despite dismissing the report, Mabanta said the military and police in the Philippines will remain on red alert status until the end of the country’s election period on November 10.
Mabanta said the military will remain to be vigilant against the local terrorist operating in country to keep Filipinos and foreigners safe from harm.
Moreover, Mabanta said terrorists are in Sulu and Basilan in the Philippines, where the Abu Sayyaf and some members of the Jemaah Islamiyah are hiding.
The Abu Syaff is one of several military Islamist separatist groups based in and around the southern Philippines, in Bangsamoro (Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga) where for almost 30 years various Muslim groups have been engaged in an insurgency for an independent province in the country.
The name of the group is derived from the Arabic ابو, abu (“father of”) and sayyaf (“Swordsmith”).
The group calls itself “Al-Harakat Al-Islamiyya” or the “Islamic Movement”.
Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, assassinations and extortion in what they describe as their fight for an independent Islamic province in the Philippines.
The United States Department of State has classified the group as a terrorist group by adding it to the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.
As a result, the CIA deployed paramilitary officers from their elite Special Activities Division to hunt down and kill or capture key terrorist leaders.
Several hundred United States soldiers are also stationed in the area to mainly train local forces in counter terror and counter guerrilla operations, but as a status of forces agreement and under Philippine law are not allowed to engage in direct combat.
