According to the EU’s anti-piracy task force, Somali pirates have seized a chemical tanker carrying lubricating oil in the Red Sea.
The pirates, the report says, attacked the Marshall Islands-flagged MT Motivator on Sunday in the northern Strait of Bab al Mandeb. The hijack was confirmed on Monday morning after communication with ship was lost, the force said in a statement.
The 13,065 ton-ship had a crew of 18 Filipinos on board, they stated.
Piracy has flourished in Africa and mainly Somalia due to 19 year of lawlessness in many parts of the continent. The waters surrounding Somalia, which include the Gulf of Aden that connects the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, are known to be among the world’s most dangerous.
