Expat Owned Business Takes Out People’s Choice Award

Australian small business Ruby’s Home Store has taken out the popular vote in the ‘favourite small online retailer’ category at this year’s Australia Post Online Retail Industry Awards (ORIAs).

What started as a side-business for Jane Fonti, a UK-expat with a love of homewares and a tinge of homesickness for her English homeland, has evolved into an award-winning brand with a dedicated customer following who share her love for the traditional interior style.

Having worked as a nurse for close to 40 years, Fonti had a calling to something more creative after her husband’s near death experience – when he suffered a cardiac arrest and was effectively dead for 45 minutes. Due to health complications following this tragic event, Fonti has also taken on the role of bread winner in the marriage.

Starting Ruby’s Home Store has been a much needed reprieve for Fonti following the difficult past years, caring for her husband and carrying on her role as a frontline worker during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ruby’s Home Store brings the best of British homewares to both expats living in Australia, and fans of the classic styling the region is known for. Stocking popular English brands including Cornishware, established in 1926 and renowned for making beautiful, practical and traditional kitchenware – think the iconic blue and white striped crockery, the online store is brimming with homewares reminiscent of the quaint English countryside.

“’After moving to Australia I really missed some of the simple pleasures of traditional English living, like a scone with jam and cream! Being able to share this style of living with Australian customers of Ruby’s Home Story has been an important way for me to connect both of these cultures and lifestyles, in a way that people can easily enjoy!” explained Fonti.
