Such a choice did not fall on a simple wind turbine, but on a system with a particularly pleasant design that makes these vertical mini wind turbines a symbol of green luxury. After all, the new way of conceiving luxury follows the new trend of ecological experiences and environmental sustainability.

How Does a Wind Turbine Work?

By harnessing the power of the wind, electrical energy is produced using turbines driven by wind blades, and wind generators convert wind energy into electrical energy through an alternator connected to the turbines.

The energy produced is actually three-phase, but through the inverter, it is converted into alternating voltage 230V at 50 Hz, i.e. the type of current we find in homes or offices.

Domestic wind systems, compared to large industrial installations on land and offshore, are simply smaller, but they operate on the same concept. A micro wind turbine is independent of the electrical grid and is responsible for covering the energy needs of an office, a home, or a sports facility.

These are the basic elements that make up a mini or micro wind turbine system:
• Wind blades
• Turbine and alternator
• Inverter
• Possible storage batteries
• Ancillary elements such as the support pole.

Benefits of a Small Wind Turbine

The first factor to consider when thinking about installing a mini or micro wind turbine is certainly where it will be installed. In fact, although these systems are high-performance, it is completely useless to install them in an area where there is not enough wind to operate the turbine.

The first thing to do, therefore, is to analyse your area to understand if, at least for most of the year, there is a minimum windiness that guarantees the movement of the wind blades.

A good method is to use an interactive Wind Atlas, a free resource that indicates the level of windiness anywhere in the world, with useful and easily understandable information. Fortunately, there are vertical wind turbines, like the one installed in Val d’Aosta, capable of producing electricity even with low-intensity wind, all thanks to cutting-edge technology.

Micro wind systems also have a significantly lower environmental impact, and if they are high-design solutions, they can be considered urban furniture elements, thus allowing better integration into the area where they are installed.

It should also be remembered that under 60 kW of power, the authorisation process is simplified.

Mini or Micro Wind turbine

So far, we have always talked about micro or mini wind turbines, but what is the difference between these systems? The real difference between the two lies simply in the power generated by the system:

• Micro wind when the power is below 20 kW
• Mini wind for powers from 20 to 60 kW

The choice can then fall on two different types of wind blades, i.e. vertical-axis wind turbines and horizontal-axis wind turbines.

Horizontal-axis turbines

These are the most used in large industrial plants and are characterised by the rotor oriented according to the winddirection, which allows a higher efficiency and greater energy production.

Vertical-axis turbines

These are less common, but they have the advantage of being able to operate with any wind direction, without the need to reorient the rotor. They are particularly suitable for areas with variable wind direction and low wind intensity.


Choosing to install a mini or micro wind turbine system can be a good solution for those who want to produce clean energy and reduce their environmental impact. It is essential to evaluate the windiness of the area where it will be installed and to choose the right type of turbine based on the local wind conditions.

The initial investment can be amortised over time, thanks to the energy savings on bills and possible incentives from the state. Moreover, opting for a high-design solution can also add an aesthetic value to the installation, making it a symbol of green luxury and environmental sustainability.

In conclusion, investing in renewable energy, such as wind energy, can be a concrete help in countering CO2 emissions and preserving the environment, while also offering potential savings on energy bills.
